We've spent the last few weeks searching for the best (and most reasonably priced) vintage home goods from all over the west coast to bring back to Feeding Birds Boutique- And we're back! We hit Washington and Oregon hard and literally had to stop shopping because we ran out of room in the car. We're back with 10 boxes and 8 bags FULL of fabulous vintage finds! We're hoping to have all the items on our website by the end of the weekend. Until then we've already put a lot of the new items in the store so you should really stop in and take a look. Feeding Birds Boutique (est. Feb. 2009) is a family owned business. We need someone in the store a few days a week. Because this is an unpaid gig we are happy to have multiple people split up the shifts so that it works with everyone's regular work/ school schedules.

Candidates must be able to commit to work a regular schedule. We were told you can receive college credit for this internship if you are a student at FIDM- but we hope it qualifies for any college. It is up to you to find out from your school if the internship applies to your major.

Currently our regular store hours are:

Tues: 12:30pm-6:00pm

Wed: 12:30am-6:00pm

Thur- Fri: 12:30am-6:00pm

Sat-Sun: 10:00am-4:00pm

We don't have anyone to work Wednesday 12:30pm- 4:15pm & Thursday 12:30pm-4:30pm so we need more help. We most likely wont need anyone to work on the weekends but there is always a possibility.

We currently have a few people helping so that no one works more than 6 hours but they have conflicting schedules and this is why we need more help.

Though this is currently an unpaid position there is an employee discount, free gifts and if you or your friends make things there is also a possibility to sell your work in our boutique.

We are a small family owned boutique that deals in consignment sales (we sell handcrafted items made by multiple local artists). We are looking for someone that is an artist and would like to have their handmade creations sold in our boutique as well as spend time in the store so that we can stay open.

Our business is run almost like a co-op. We are a forum for artists that would otherwise have nowhere else to sell goods. While we give them a place to sell their goods (we do not charge them a fee to sell here like ebay, etsy, antique malls, or paypal do) they spend a few hours in the store so we can keep the doors open. Most of our artists are friends and family working as little as 2 hours a week. Those who are in college use it as a tool to gain experience and school credit (their choice). Others use it as something to put on a resume to gain a paid job in the future (some have never had a job before).

We are seeking a hard worker who is very reliable, highly organized, punctual, and takes direction well.

It is imperative that the candidate be computer literate. And have your own mac laptop. Candidates must be familiar with social networking sites like facebook, myspace, blogger, twitter, flickr etc.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL:

*Live near Echo Park!

*Have a car and valid drivers license

*Have a flexible schedule.

*Have retail experience preferably in a clothing store

*Be computer and internet savvy and like to do research on the internet

*Know how to write with proper spelling and grammar, including formatting letters and emails.

*Be a self-starter, who can carry out projects with little direction and oversight.

EXTRA POINTS IF YOU:

*Sew and are interested in designing clothing to be sold in a unique boutique setting.

*Have a good eye as a photographer, graphic artist or visual merchandiser.

*Has PR and marketing experience.

*Are interested in helping with occasional non-union costuming jobs.

PHYSICAL MANDATORY IN STORE DUTIES

*Keeping the store clean (dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, cleaning the windows and a shared bathroom)

*Opening and closing the store (unlocking and locking, bringing in and out patio furniture and sign)

*Assisting customers, writing up sales and dealing with cash and the credit card machine. (Please know how to count!)

GENERAL INTERNSHIP DUTIES

*Assistance at special events (For example, weekend sales, promotional parties, art walks, craft fairs, etc...)

*Possible office work.

*Running occasional errands (shopping for supplies, shipping orders at post office, mailing consignment checks.)

*Help with creative brainstorming, trend and fashion research, sourcing research and branding analysis.

*Organizing, steaming, logging, photographing merchandise.

*Possible PR and marketing (writing press releases, assembling press packets, sending newsletters, event planning, customer and press relations, maintaining social networking pages).

Crafting for the PDA

Just found these photos and thought I'd post them... It was the first stages of the Echo Park Ave. Art Walk coupon egg hunt project. Feeding Birds Boutique donated candy, eggs, printed & cut out coupons and dropped them off at all the participating businesses. Each business participating was asked to decorate the plastic eggs in a way that represented the business. We dipped our blue eggs in glue and then in bird seed. The coupons were to be hidden in the eggs and then hidden around the stores and when the eggs were found the coupon went with the egg hunter and the eggs were supposed to be refilled with another coupon and then re-hidden so the first few people that arrived didn't get them all... I'm not sure if that went on at the other stores- but I know we re-filled lots of eggs and explained to each person that found an egg where the store (from the coupon they found) was located and what they sold. The point was to get the art walkers to circulate to all the stores including stores they ordinarily wouldn't have gone into to bring the community together.

Echo Park Ave. PDA (public displays of art) Walk!

Yup! It's time for another Echo Park Ave. Art Walk! This one is April 3, 2010 from 12pm-6pm all up & down Echo Park Ave from Blue Collar to Fix! We hope you can attend this Echo Park adventure! There will be lots of art, photography, music, sales, print tee's, screen printing, food trucks & hidden eggs with store coupons throughout some of the participating stores.

Hopefully Feeding Birds musical line up will include:
The sweet sounds of guitarist Miles Moore (around 1-3pm)
Alternative-indie-folk rock ensemble Sons of August (around 4pm)
The hilarity of guitar & harmonica player Smokey Miles (around 5pm).

Aside from live music we plan to have a sidewalk print sale (around 1-5pm) with Feeding Birds & Dan Schmidt from Evil Monito. Lots of print tee's for sale as well as screen printing demo's, print while you wait & stenciling. If you'd like a Feeding Birds shirt made please bring a light colored t-shirt for some $1.00 printing/ stenciling.

We will also have collage art by Amy Elise Roberts hanging from our shutters and be taking over Chahin Travel (next door because they will be closed) and showcasing photography by Echo Park resident Nate Nickels from the door, shutters & fence as well as have a food truck (we think Calbi bbq).

Twin Rams 100% Soy Candles!

Feeding Birds is happy to now carry Twin Rams soy candles!
Twin Rams, was launched by Akame Jenkins (an LA Native) in November 2009 because she believed in doing her part to help the environment-in a most stylish way of course. So Akame set out with the intent to make earth-friendly and yet still beautiful candles... and she did! The candles come in recyclable tins and are made of 100% pure soy wax, and that’s it!

"All our evocative scents are hand mixed and contain organic essential and fragrance oils. I carefully hand craft each candle, from the setting of the wick to the packaging of the final product, so each is one is unique"- Akame says of her line.

More "Sol del Sur" Coming Soon To Feeding Birds!

Upcycled textile earrings by Sol del Sur! The earrings hang from a sterling silver kidney earwire. The clamp that holds it together is silver plated.

These earrings are made with re-purposed fabrics that she gets from clothing at the thrift store (some vintage, some not), so they are limited editions. Pattern placement might vary from the ones pictured here.

Soledad describes her earrings as "simple yet out of common earrings that would make a great match with your neutral t-shirts and sweaters! And what about a strapless dress?"

Hopefully, Soledad will bring her new creations over on Sunday (along with more of her Chilean sheep's wool scarves) when she comes over to fill out some paperwork to become one of our newest interns!

Feeding Birds finally has a sign!!!!

I think a YAY is in order! It's taken us a year but we finally have a sign above our window! "Toosweet" who also painted the Chahin Travel sign next door came out today and painted it within a few hours! We chose to do our name in our signature blue and our 2 birds in black so it would stand out. We think it looks great! What do you think?

Echo Park PDA, FB Anniversary & a flood!

February 6, 2010 was a highly productive day at Feeding Birds Boutique!

Not only did we participate in the Echo Park Public Display of Art Walk from 12-6pm with the calbi bbq truck parked outside, $1.00 screen printing, short film screenings, live music by Miles Moore, sales and free snacks & drinks but we also had our one year anniversary party with more sales, champagne & quiche for all from 6-9pm and all this while our store was flooded!

Yes, we had to get up Saturday morning and totally rearrange the store to make sure certain things didn't get wet... Too wet... We wound up only loosing one item (a ceramic canister that broke in the shuffle) and as a result we also pulled out the red sharpie and marked down some prices. All in all it turned out to be a great day, full of excitement... And rain...

"I am creating a sidewalk gallery “Art Hop” in Echo Park and would love for YOU to be a part of it! A one day event that will turn the neighborhood of Echo Park into a fun, playful and engaging artistic landscape! Imagine, gathering with your group of friends on the corner of Echo Park Ave. and Delta St. Bundled up in L.A. winter gear, not quite sure what adventure you’re about to get into, you’re handed a map. On this map you discover the sites of chain link fence galleries, driveway theaters, a hands on crafting station, performance art, intersection musical performances, outdoor movie screenings, sculptures, parking lot mini concerts and other various creative & mind stimulating public displays of ART. We are happy to announce that we now carry Just Fairies t-shirts!

Just Fairies is the brainchild of Veronika Bakos a 705 costumer living in southern California. Veronika moved to America 15 years ago from her homeland of Sweden to attend the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Downtown Los Angeles. Although she got a degree in Fashion Design when she graduated she started helping a friend do costumes on independent films has been one of the set costumers on CSI: Las Vegas for over 8 years. Getting back to her roots Veronika illustrated and designed all of the shirts for Just Fairies a concept that is inspired by Veronikas young daughter Trinity.

The Feeding Birds Original Knit Pouch have a knit piece sewn on to the back so they can be slid right on your belt loop or just tossed in your purse.

Earlier this month I posted some photos from a shoot I worked on for Days of Our Lives and talked about how the actress Molly Burnett (Melanie Layton, Days of Our Lives) not only picked to wear the Whish "black & cream chiffon 'paint' two layer dress" from our store for her publicity photos but she also asked to wear it again on an episode of the show. Well, I have found the episode of the show (which airs all this week) online where she wears the dress.

Yes, it's another Feeding Birds in the media update!
I found a video online with not one but two items purchased from Feeding Birds in the scene! In this video Kinsey (Shelby Young, Days of Our Lives) has an amykathryn vegan plumeria pink purse over her shoulder and Mia McCormick (Taylor Spreitler, Days of Our Lives) is wearing the Whish grey cotton tunic racerback tank (we only have one left)!

So, I was looking online today and I found some photos from a shoot I did back in March '09 and thought I'd share.

We do it all ourselves from converting the images, to burning the screens, and then putting them on the shirts!
It's interesting how each shirt takes the ink differently. We love how some prints are super dark and others have more of a hazy effect like it's vintage!
